In class assignment 4/30
TV’s topic ideas: Disney princesses, chick flicks - subversion of the dumb blonde
I will examine World War II food ration ads, and how they utilize race, gender, and sexuality to portray a white picket fence idea of loyalty and duty. I will be focusing on chocolate ads specifically and how the ads portray men and women differently. I have chosen the three images below as a starting point to my analysis. In all three images there is a white man present who is dressed in a soldier’s garb.
Directions I am considering taking my primary research
Sexualization or infantilization of women in ads
Painting women’s role in the war as not valuable
Making women out to be overly reliant on the men in their lives
The stereotypical war hero and a “halo”
martyrdom
Directions I am considering taking my secondary research
Mistreatment of women in the Hershey’s chocolate factory
How ration ads idealized the housewife life
